At least 3 people died in the violent clashes over the survey of a Mughal-era Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district on Sunday.
Sambal: In the latest development in the violent clashes over the survey of a mosque in Sambhal district, at least three people have died, informed Moradabad divisional commissioner Ananya Kumar. The deceased were identified as Naeem, Bilal, and Niman. “Three persons namely Naeem, Bilal and Niman died during the clash. He said 20 to 22 cops including officials ( CO Sambhal, PRO to SP Sambhal, one SDM) sustained injuries while other injured received injuries of splinters). Meanwhile, 15 persons have been detained,” Hindustan times quoted Kumar as saying.
An ASI team that arrived at the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid to conduct a survey of the mosque in Sambhal district faced stone-pelting from some “anti-social elements” earlier in the day.
Notably, the survey was conducted after the court’s order following a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain. He claimed that the particular mosque was originally a temple.
