San Francisco police have made an arrest following a vicious attack on three people at Shaws, a historic candy store in the city’s West Portal neighborhood.
Officers from Taraval Station responded to a report of an assault at the store at approximately 1:42 p.m. on Wednesday, an SFPD spokesperson told SFGATE. The officers found upon their arrival that three people had been attacked.
The victims include the store’s owner, Diana Zogaric, along with an employee and a customer, KTVU-TV reported. Zogaric was reportedly shoved, pushed to the ground and punched in the head, resulting in injuries that required a trip to the emergency room.

“This time he just jumped up and started lunging at me and attacked me. I just kept thinking he was going to stop. He hit a couple of times and he paused and then he came at me again and every time I thought, ‘OK, I haven’t fallen or anything yet. I think I’m going to be OK.’ He stopped and then he would just come again and again and again,” Zogaric told KTVU.
Nearby civilians tackled and restrained the suspect until police arrived, according to KTVU. Following the assault, officers located, detained and arrested an adult male suspect, SFPD said.
According to city crime data, there have been 73 reports of violent assaults in the area monitored by Taraval Station since January. There were also 73 reports of violent assaults in the area during this date range in 2022.
Shaws has been operating in West Portal since 1931, aside from a brief closure in 2020. The store has experienced multiple break-ins and robberies over the past several years, KTVU reported.
