Most NFL MVP race prognosticators have effectively knocked 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy out of the running after his rough performance against the Ravens. But at least one of Purdy’s star teammates is still trying to help his case.

Deebo Samuel showed up to the 49ers’ game at the Commanders on Sunday wearing a customized red vest made by Kristin Juszczyk, who is married to 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk. The vest has Purdy’s name on the back, his number on the front and back and “MVP” in white font all over. Kristin Juszczyk creates streetwear-inspired fits for herself and others throughout football season; she even recently made a special vest for Olympian Simone Biles.

Samuel has perhaps been the most outspoken advocate on the 49ers for Purdy to win MVP this year. When Samuel made his weekly appearance on the “Up and Adams” daily YouTube show after the Niners blasted the Eagles, Samuel made it clear how he felt about Purdy’s play.

“My boy No. 1 right now, it ain’t even up for debate,” Samuel said on Dec. 5. “He’s just gotta keep stacking games, stacking days, stacking weeks. We gotta go out here as a team and make plays for him.”

Purdy did keep doing that for two more weeks after the Eagles’ game and was the clear MVP favorite after Week 15, when he returned to his home state of Arizona and dazzled in a win over the Cardinals. But Purdy fell out of the running after the loss to Baltimore on Christmas Day, when he threw a career-high four interceptions in the Niners’ 33-19 loss.

Purdy isn’t even the top Niner in the current NFL MVP odds — most sportsbooks have running back Christian McCaffrey higher than Purdy — but he’s clearly still got the support of his teammates. He could get back in the thick of MVP race on Sunday when the 49ers play the Commanders at 10 a.m. PT on Fox.
