5 Dos and Don’ts of Dengue Fever

  1. Use Mosquito Repellents: Apply an effective mosquito repellent  when going outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  2.  Wear Protective Clothing: Cover up by wearing long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, and socks to minimise exposed skin and prevent mosquito bites.
  3. Maintain Hygiene: Regularly check and eliminate any standing water around your home, as these can become breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
  4. Seek Early Medical Attention: If you develop symptoms like high fever, severe headache, joint/muscle pain, or skin rash, seek medical advice immediately. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are crucial.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, electrolyte-rich drinks, or soups, to prevent dehydration and support the body’s recovery.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid Self-Medication: Do not attempt to self-medicate or take over-the-counter medications without consulting a healthcare professional. Some medications can worsen the symptoms of dengue.
  2. Don’t Ignore Platelet Counts: Dengue can cause a significant drop in platelet levels, which is a crucial indicator of the disease’s progression. Do not ignore any changes in your platelet count.
  3. Refrain from Aspirin: Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can increase the risk of bleeding and other complications in dengue patients.
  4. Don’t Neglect Rest: Adequate rest and proper recovery are essential for individuals with dengue fever. Avoid strenuous physical activity and allow the body to heal.
  5. Steer Clear of Mosquito Breeding Grounds: Refrain from visiting or spending time in areas with known mosquito infestations or standing water, as this increases the risk of exposure to dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Adhering to these dos and don’ts can help you stay vigilant and proactive in preventing and managing dengue fever during the monsoon season.
