After facing backlash, Punjab stops transfer of 162 teachers

CHANDIGARH: After getting backlash for transfering 162 teachers to schools of eminence (SoE), the Punjab education department on Monday revoked the transfer orders with immediate effect.
The director of school education (Secondary) had issued the transfer orders on October 13, which triggered strong reactions from teachers’ bodies. They accused the government of transferring teachers without following procedure and taking consent of teachers, leading to protests across the state. They resorted to burning copies of the transfer orders. A memorandum was also submitted to the education minister, demanding the cancellation of the orders.
The department has now withdrawn the order, but emphasised that the decision was taken to ensure students’ academics were not affected.
Criticising the government, Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) state vice-president Raghveer Singh Bhawanigarh asserted that the decision to transfer teachers was taken in haste and in violation of norms, which forced the authorities to cancel the transfer orders. Bhawanigarh demanded that the government not transfer teachers from ordinary government schools, which are already grappling with staff shortage, to schools of eminence. “The government should recruit teachers for SoEs, instead of transferring them from normal schools,” said Bhawanigarh.
The government faces the daunting task of filling a large number of vacant posts of teachers in government schools. At present, there are nearly 15,000 vacant posts, with the highest number of vacancies for junior basic training or elementary teacher training teachers, followed by the master cadre, head teachers, and headmasters.
