Pregnant preschool teacher killed in Bay Area hit-and-run, police say

A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed by a driver in a stolen car who fled the scene, officials said Thursday.

The fatal collision occurred on Blossom Hill Road near Winfield Boulevard by the Westfield Oakridge shopping mall at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday. The woman — identified by the the Santa Clara Medical Examiner as April Zoglauer, 21, of San Jose — was driving eastbound in a 2008 black Nissan sedan on Blossom Hill Road. Zoglauer’s car was struck by a driver in a stolen white 2013 Hyundai who was traveling southbound, the San Jose Police Department said.

Zoglauer was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. KTVU-TV reported that she was eight months pregnant and worked as a preschool teacher. The baby was delivered via emergency C-section on Tuesday night; the initial report from the department said the baby survived and was in critical condition, but an update on Thursday indicated the child has died.

The stolen car was occupied by the driver and a passenger, and both men took off from the scene of the collision, according to police. The hit-and-run remains under investigation and anyone with information can call San Jose police at 408-277-4654.
