Alphabet-owned Google has said that the company will invest up to $2 billion in the artificial intelligence company Anthropic. The company has invested $500 million into the OpenAI rival, and said it will add $1.5 billion to the sum.
Google is already an investor in Anthropic and the fresh investment could strengthen its position to better compete with Microsoft, a major backer of ChatGPT creator OpenAI.
Apart from Google, Anthropic has other investors which include Salesforce and Zoom. Amazon also said last month it would invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic to compete with growing cloud rivals on AI, news agency Reuters reported.
Google invested $300 million in the company in April and took a 10% stake. Anthropic was also one of four companies invited to a meeting at the White House to discuss responsible AI development. Google parent Alphabet, Microsoft and OpenAI were the other companies.
Anthropic founders are former OpenAI executives
Anthropic was founded by Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela Amodei. While Dario was OpenAI’s former vice president of research, Daniela was OpenAI’s vice president of safety and policy.
Amodei said in July that Anthropic worked for at least two months to develop its newest chatbot. He said a team of 30 to 35 people were working directly on the AI model.
“It’s a really unusual time from a business perspective because there’s just so much demand for large language models and really more demand than the industry can currently provide,” he said at that time.
“The landscape is just very wide, and there’s really quite a lot of room for many different users and types of users to make use of these systems,” Amodei added.
