Calif. woman reportedly finds neighbor in closet

A California woman says she’s moved out of her luxury apartment complex after reportedly discovering a burglar hiding inside a closet.

According to multiple media reports, Brittney Heinzman recently moved into an apartment off Jamboree Road in Irvine. She left her home for the Thanksgiving holiday, and when she returned on Dec. 1, Heinzman said the door was unlocked and her home was ransacked. As she made her way through the home, Heinzman told CBS News that she opened a closet door to find a woman hiding inside. The woman was reportedly holding a pizza cutter.

The woman allegedly ran out of the apartment, and Heinzman called police. Irvine police who spoke with CBS News said the 43-year-old suspect was a neighbor in the same apartment complex. They believe she likely “went into the residence multiple times to collect items” while Heinzman was gone.

Irvine is traditionally among the safest cities in California. Last year, it was named the safest city in America of its size by the FBI. The agency’s crime statistics found that Irvine had the lowest per-capita violent crime rate among U.S. cities with 250,000 residents or more. It was the 17th year in a row that Irvine took the top honor.
