Spider-Man’s 2024 MCU Return Gets New Title & New Spider-Suit Confirmed

An update has been revealed about Spider-Man in 2024, as the MCU confirmed the new title of the next Spider-Man installment, as well as providing certain viewers with a glimpse of a new costume. While Marvel has confirmed that the only theatrical release of 2024 will be Deadpool 3, Disney+ is set to roll out more series, with the likes of Echo and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries keeping the wider MCU narrative going. Meanwhile, animations aplenty are en route in the form of X-Men ’97 and the newly announced Eyes of Wakanda series, along with an animated Spider-Man show.

As part of a special screening of What If…? season 2’s first two episodes, IGN reports that Marvel revealed a first look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the new title of the previously announced animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, alongside footage featuring Peter Parker’s “proto spider suit.” Marvel further confirmed that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will release in 2024.

The Show Gives Peter’s Early Years A Place In The MCU

Aside from providing a dose of Spider-Man to keep fans satiated for the next year, there are wider positive ramifications that come with a Spider-Man release in 2024. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will focus on the early career of Peter Parker as he adopts the mantle of the Marvel superhero for the first time. This is a period of Spider-Man’s life that the MCU brushed over instead of covering ground that was already well-trodden by Sony. While the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man plot will not factor into the wider MCU, it will at least help to flesh out the web-slinger’s overarching narrative as he navigates the early stages of super-powered life.

Meanwhile, the exclusive footage screened by Marvel suggests there will be a good look at another version of Spider-Man’s protosuit – the first iteration of his famous costume that was very briefly seen in the MCU. While anything but flashy, it is a testament to Peter Parker’s resourcefulness and an integral part of his growth. The series will also feature villains that have yet to appear in the MCU, including Chameleon and an original version of Norman Osborne, who will reportedly act as Parker’s mentor throughout the show.

An Alternate Universe Peter Parker

Unlike many of Marvel’s live-action series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is not directly connected to the larger MCU. The series takes place in an alternate universe, where a new actor will be portraying Peter Parker. At the moment, Hudson Thames (the voice of Spider-Man in Marvel’s What If…?) is named on the copyright listings for the series, although this is not a confirmation of his role in the new show. While some may be disappointed that the animation is not going to directly connect to the larger universe, the benefit of this is that is allows for an exploration of Peter’s early years as Spider-Man that comes with greater creative freedom. The characters within this series can have different story arcs than they do in the universe where Tom Holland plays the web-slinger.

It’s also very possible that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will, at some point, have a place in the larger MCU thanks to the multiverse. As No Way Home proved, anything is possible within the spider-verse, and there is no reason for Marvel to keep this new series entirely walled off within the universe.
