The vehicle finance company LeaseCar.uk has issued a safety warning, urging motorists planning on travelling on New Years Eve to avoid getting behind the wheel close to midnight.
As the end of the year approaches, many families are planning to attend fireworks displays to start 2024 off with a bang.
However, Tim Alcock from LeaseCar.uk warned that driving as fireworks are being set off nearby can significantly reduce visibility.
He explained: “Many motorists will be shocked to find out that fireworks can be dramatically cut visibility on the roads. Although firework displays can be distracting, the majority of drivers know the importance of keeping their eyes on the road.
“However, it is not common knowledge that fireworks can affect air quality which has visibility-reducing consequences which are dangerous for all road users. On average, firework displays cut visibility by a quarter, but in some parts of the UK, it has been recorded at over 60 percent.”

According to data from meteorological stations across the UK, firework displays can cut visibility nearby by 25 percent.
However, some parts of the UK had significantly reduced visibility following a display, with Nottingham recording a 64 percent drop.
Whilst most of the fog caused by fireworks disappears quickly, LeaseCar.uk warned that their impact may not completely disappear for three days.
Tim warned that driving during a nearby fireworks display can lead to motorists facing shorter reaction times, increasing the risk of collisions.
He continued: “This is a real concern for motorists heading out over the New Year period, and for the days after, because their chances of getting involved in a car crash are increased.
“It is important that motorists alter their driving style if they know firework displays are on because there is evidence to suggest it will lower visibility, even if you don’t see a difference.”
As well as checking for nearby firework displays, LeaseCar.uk also recommended that motorists reduce their speed and brake gently when on the road.
The company also recommended that motorists make sure they are seen by other road users by switching on their headlamps.
However, drivers should only turn on the vehicle’s fog lamps if the driver’s visibility drops to below 100 metres around the vehicle.
