Summary
- Nintendo Switch owners should watch out for upcoming announcements in February 2024, as the console developer is known for hosting Nintendo Directs in early February.
- Rumors suggest that the Switch 2 may be an improved version of the Switch, and it is speculated to be releasing in 2024.
- Even if a Switch 2 announcement doesn’t come, a likely February 2024 Nintendo Direct will still reveal games to expect throughout the year.
Although the Nintendo Switch could be approaching the end of its time as Nintendo’s main console, Switch owners will still want to watch out for upcoming announcements in February 2024. Aside from announcements previously made in 2023, like the planned releases of Princess Peach: Showtime! and the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Nintendo’s plans for 2024 have yet to be fully outlined. With other game companies making announcements in showcases like the Xbox Developer Direct and the Sony State of Play, however, Nintendo is likely to follow suit with a February 2024 Direct.
Of particular interest regarding Nintendo’s future plans are the rumors surrounding the potential release of a Switch 2 in 2024 – though nothing has been confirmed by the company itself, several rumors have placed Nintendo’s next console as an improved version of the Switch with a 2024 release date. Unlike many of Nintendo’s past consoles, which have tended to be drastically different from their predecessors, the Switch 2 would ostensibly be an upgrade more along the lines of Xbox and PlayStation generations – though, as a sequel console from Nintendo, it would hopefully find more success than the Wii U.
Looks Like Nintendo Switch 2 Is Real & Might Be Better Than We Ever Imagined
The Nintendo Switch’s successor has apparently been revealed to select partners in a secret Nintendo presentation at Gamescom 2023.
A Nintendo Direct Is Probably Coming In February
Whether the Switch 2 rumors are true or not, it’s still likely that Nintendo will host a Nintendo Direct in early February 2024, continuing a trend that’s held true since 2019. Following the Xbox Developer Direct on January 18, and the Sony State of Play on January 31, a February Direct will make Nintendo the last of the major console developers to unveil its 2024 plans, but potentially also the most exciting, given the rumors of a new console. Following the 2023 releases of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, however, it’s unlikely that Nintendo’s biggest franchises will receive reveals for mainline games.
The February Direct Might Not Announce The Switch 2
While the rumors regarding a Switch 2 announcement are exciting, it’s still best to temper expectations – the Switch’s original reveal in 2016 didn’t take place until October, and even then, the console didn’t release until March the following year. Moreover, rumors surrounding the announcement and release date of the Switch 2 have been circulating for a while, as far back as the start of 2023 or even earlier, so, while many signs suggest the console will release relatively soon, Nintendo could be saving the announcement for later in the year.
As new Switch 2 rumors continue to pop up, however, including hardware specs and release windows, it becomes relatively more likely that the next console will see a 2024 announcement – even if it doesn’t happen in February. With many of Nintendo’s mainline franchises having seen major releases in 2023, however, much is currently unknown regarding the 2024 Switch games lineup. Whether it’s a showcase of smaller titles coming to the Switch, or the major reveal of an entirely new console, Nintendo Switch owners can still look forward to a likely February Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo Switch Games Releasing In February 2024

Interestingly, the two first-party Nintendo releases aren’t necessarily wholly new games. Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a remake of the Game Boy Advance puzzle platformer from 2004, and Splatoon 3: Side Order is a single-player campaign expansion for the third-person shooter. Similarly, the classic Tomb Raider games are being remastered for modern consoles, but Nintendo Switch users should be able to find plenty to keep entertained through February 2024 regardless.
Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch is the successor to 2012’s Wii U console. The Nintendo Switch allows gamers to easily switch between playing on a TV to a handheld console. The first model was released in 2017, followed by the Nintendo Switch Lite, which is strictly a handheld console. In October 2021, Nintendo released an upgraded Switch console with an OLED screen.
