Viltrox is bringing the AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro lens, the second in its ultra-large aperture prime lens Pro series of optics that aims to combine ultra-high resolution and super large aperture that produces “pleasant” bokeh, to Sony and Nikon APS-C cameras.
When it was originally released for Fujifilm X-mount, the lens joined the 75mm f/1.2 in the Viltrox’s “pro” series of optics.
Viltrox says the 27mm focal length has a full-frame equivalent of about 40mm, which it claims is close to the viewing angle of the human eye and is “the gold standard focal length” that is suitable for street photography, portraits, and even landscapes.
Viltrox adds that the 27mm f/1.2 Pro has incredibly high resolving power that “allows every detail of the image” to be clear and true-to-life. The f/1.2 aperture not only makes the lens more performant in low lighting conditions, but Viltrox says it provides a very shallow depth of field that produces beautiful bokeh and helps reduce distractions in the background, even if they are very busy.
The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro features a construction of 15 elements arranged into 11 groups, including five high-refractive index lenses, two extra-low dispersion lenses (to suppress chromatic aberration), and one aspherical lens to correct for distortion. The lens has a close focusing distance of 0.28 meters or about 11 inches.
The optic features an aperture range of f/1.2 through f/16 via an 11-bladed diaphragm. Aperture control can be toggled from both the attached camera as well as on the lens itself via the stepped, clicked ring in front of the camera mount. The body of the lens also includes an autofocus/manual focus switch and single focus lock button. The front of the lens features a 67mm filter size.
The lens features autofocus support that is provided via a stepping motor (STM). Viltrox says it has the force necessary to support precise tracking including eye AF, animal AF, and other subject recognition modes.
Viltrox says the lens has been sealed against dust and water and includes multiple high-grade rings that reject weather. The inside of the camera mount also has an included USB-C port that can be used to update firmware.
The Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 Pro is now available for both Sony E and Nikon Z mounts for $545 from both Viltrox and Amazon. Of note, that’s the same price the company charged for the Fujifilm X-mount version.
