A documentary around the botched Willy Wonka event in Glasgow is set to air on Channel 5.
The hour-long documentary titled “The Willy Wonka Scandal” is scheduled to air on Channel 5 at 7.35pm on Saturday, March 16.
Willy’s Chocolate Experience, organised by immersive events company House of Illuminati, promised ticket goers an “enchanting” day out where “dreams come to life”.
Held at the Box Hub Warehouse in the Whiteinch area of the city, parents were promised a day of “pure imagination and wonder”.
The ill-fated “immersive experience” was cancelled hours after opening due to frustration from visitors who branded it a “farce” and said their children were left upset by the quality of the attraction which had been advertised using AI-generated imagery.
In a statement, House of Illuminati apologised to customers and said it should have cancelled the event as it was “let down last minute” by suppliers, adding the event “did not take shape as planned”.
News of the event went viral across social media, with a number of the actors employed to take part in the event speaking out.
Kirsty Paterson, who played an Oompa Loompa at the event, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that she expected it to look better from when she saw it the night before opening.
“I remember on the Friday when I went, it looked like that.
“I kind of thought to myself ‘surely, they must have people working throughout the night for this to be better, with lights, everything like that’”.
The news of the documentary comes after it was announced that a feature length film inspired by the viral character “The Unknown” is in the works.
A website listed in the name of Kaledonia Pictures claims a feature length film is “to be released in 2024”.
A spokesperson for the production company told STV News: “Last week we witnessed the birth of a new horror icon in real time, and now we look forward to bringing our own original interpretation of it to life.”
Kaledonia Pictures said the owner of Willy’s Chocolate Experience organisers House of Illuminati was not involved in the project “whatsoever”.
Channel 5 has been contacted for comment.
