Gifted astrophotographer, author, and educator Alyn Wallace tragically passed away last week at the young age of 34.
Wallace, born in Wales, had been living in Istanbul, Turkey, where he passed away as a result of a severe infection that caused multiple organ failure. Alyn’s parents, Pauline and Ian, explain on an Instagram post announcing Alyn’s untimely passing that he had been dealing with a pre-existing condition that weakened his immune system. A recent gallbladder stone infection “spread rapidly,” and ultimately took Wallace’s life.
Alyn Wallace, known for his brilliant YouTube channel, had most recently published a new video just a couple of weeks ago, which is about the same time as Alyn’s last Instagram post, seen below.
Alongside his popular YouTube channel, which has nearly 150,000 subscribers and hundreds of amazing videos, Wallace published an acclaimed book, Photographing the Night Sky, and won numerous awards for his work, including as part of The Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.
Wallace’s work has also been featured across many publications, including National Geographic, BBC Earth, The Guardian, and PetaPixel.
Beyond his many accomplishments and a beautiful portfolio of work, Wallace has also significantly impacted many fellow photographers, inspiring people to get out and enjoy the night sky.
Tributes from fellow photographers have poured in on Instagram, astrophotography forums, and Facebook.
Photographer Anthony Lynch even wrote a poem in tribute to Alyn.
“I am so, so sorry for your loss and my deepest condolences. I’m sure the entire photography community is in shock and Alyn will definitely be remembered for the kind and passionate photographer he was,” writes landscape photographer and fellow YouTuber Mads Peter Iversen.
“So sorry for your loss. Alyn touched so many with his amazing knowledge but most of all his humility. He was the most down to earth guy and someone who will stay with us all forever,” says photographer Nigel Danson.
“There are no words to describe our loss and the pain we’re in. Knowing that he’s had a chance to touch many lives through social media, teach, inspire, and connect with so many souls worldwide puts a consolation smile on all of us,” Wallace’s parents write. They explain that any news concerning their son’s photos, workshops, and legacy will be announced later via Alyn’s Instagram account.
Alyn Wallace touched many lives through his photography, education, and passion for the stars. To borrow a phrase from Greg Sheard’s touching tribute to Wallace at Fstoppers, PetaPixel wishes Alyn Wallace clear skies. His impact will be felt for many years to come, and his stunning photos and inspirational videos will prove timeless.
