Real-Life Weight Loss Story: How 55-Year-Old Sanjana Grover Lost 30 Kgs By Walking 20,000 Steps a Day?

Real-Life Weight Loss Story: Weight loss is a journey that requires an emotional, mental and physical investment of different levels. A subjective journey, the route, time and destination can be different for different people. Everyone has their reason for how, when and why they embarked on this mission. For Sanjana, it was for her son and fall out of her marriage. It is not always easy for women to lose weight in their 50s due to several physiological and biological reasons. But, dedication and consistency go a long way.

Speaking exclusively with India.com, Sanjana Grover said, “The fallout of my marriage served as my main motivation. My life was absolutely transformed by that encounter. In my early 30s, I was moving back to my parents’ Gurgaon home with my son, and I was finding it difficult to focus on myself. “What doesn’t break you, makes you stronger,” as the saying goes, is true. In light of this, I made a conscious effort to lead a better and healthier life for my family as well as for myself.”

Sanjana lost 30 kgs in one year by adhering to a dedicated diet and exercise routine. Here is her inspiring journey of embarking on a happier and healthier life and how!

What Was Your Weight Loss Diet And Routine?

“I lost almost 30 kgs in one year. However, my weight kept fluctuating here and there”, said Sanjana. Regarding my diet plan, I contacted and sought advice from a qualified nutritionist. I was advised to include a lot of vegetables in my diet. In addition, I consciously decided not to have any cheat meals for the entire year. Moreover, I used to walk almost 20,000 steps a day. This was before I was introduced to Cult. I also did some yoga and light strength training.

Did You Completely Cut Down on Sugar?

Yes, I completely cut down on sugar. Moreover, I gave up on flour, be it wheat or refined.

Did You Have Cheat Meals?

I deliberately avoided having any cheat meals. But now that I know a little bit about fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle, I am adamant that people should prioritise portion control over skipping out on their favourite foods.

What is One Rule That You Abide by For Losing Weight?

There was a negative impact on me when I stopped eating flour altogether, both wheat and refined. I say this because I began gaining weight again the year after I switched back to eating one roti a day. This approach isn’t sustainable, and it wasn’t working for me. I therefore live by the rule that everything should be enjoyed in moderation. Consume everything in moderation. Have a tiny piece of chocolate, for instance, if you’re craving a whole chocolate.

What Was One Thing That Worked Best For You?

Being a foodie myself, I soon realised that I could not live on a strict diet and eat things like millet and quinoa daily. Thus, as previously stated, I found that it was best to enjoy everything in moderation. I always felt satisfied, joyful, and energised after eating, which allowed me to work out vigorously every day. I started putting portion control on my dinner plates. For instance, I would only eat one roti per meal rather than two, along with either dal or a different vegetable. Timely eating also assisted me in establishing a proper routine. I ate dinner by seven o’clock in the evening.

One Challenge That You Faced And How Did You Overcome it?

Cutting down on flour was difficult for me. Because as soon as I began eating roti again, I started to put on weight. I concentrated on portion control and maintained a consistent diet of moderation in everything to help me overcome that challenge.

Is There a Weight Loss Myth That You Got to Know About During Your Journey?

One misconception that I kept hearing was that carbs are unhealthy for your body. People would advise me to follow a Keto diet or an all-fruit diet. These methods might work for some people, but they weren’t sustainable or good for my body and health.

Sanjana brings her fair share of experiences and while on her journey for a better lifestyle, she started discovering her body requirements and what works for her. Emphasising sustainable weight loss, she said,” Though I am by no means an expert in weight loss, I would like to share this one piece of advice with all of my fellow fitness enthusiasts who are making an effort to live a healthier lifestyle: there are many ways to lose weight, but the most sustainable approach is to keep your body happy and satisfied instead of starving it. You can enjoy all your favourite meals but in moderation.

“I don’t think we were put on this earth to not eat or to not enjoy all the delicious food available to us,” Sanjana believes and we couldn’t agree more.
