Four Indian medical students were drowned in a river near St Petersburg in Russia and the Indian missions in the country were coordinating with Russian authorities to send their bodies to their relatives as soon as possible. The four students – two boys and two girls aged 18-20, were studying at the nearby Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod city.

The incident took place when a female Indian student encountered difficulty while wading in the river Volkhov, prompting her companions to rush to save her and in that attempt three others also drowned in the river. A third boy was pulled to safety by local people.

Efforts to Repatriate Bodies

Indian authorities are working to coordinate with Russian officials to repatriate the bodies of the deceased students to their grieving families at the earliest. Additionally, the Embassy of India in Moscow has assured that the surviving student is receiving the necessary care and support during this challenging time.

“We are working to send the bodies to the relatives as soon as possible. Proper treatment is also being provided to the student whose life has been saved,” the Embassy of India in Moscow said on X.

Condolences and Support from Indian Missions

The Consulate General of India in St Petersburg expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the community. The students, dedicated to pursuing their medical education at Veliky Novgorod State University. The entire Indian community stands in solidarity with the bereaved families during this difficult period.

“Sincere condolences to the bereaved families,” it posted on X. “The bereaved families have been contacted and assured of all the possible help,” it added.

Officials have not yet released details on the cause of the drowning or the identity of the victims.
