(NewsNation) — The same day Senate Republicans blocked legislation codifying in vitro fertilization access, a Gallup poll revealed 82% of Americans believe IVF is “morally acceptable.”
That belief is held across political lines, but a divide appears when religion and the destruction of frozen embryos are brought into the mix.
Around 63% of weekly churchgoers believe IVF is morally acceptable. Those who make it to church on a more monthly basis polled 77%, while 91% of people who rarely or never attend services find it acceptable.
In total, 49% of Americans believe destroying frozen embryos created for IVF procedures is moral, while 43% feel it is immoral.
Democrats are the only party who believe destroying embryos is moral. Approximately 65% of Democrats feel that way, a large gap with the 39% of Republicans who think the same. Independents polled at 43% for the same question.
Republicans led the results when it comes to legislation giving embryos “some of the same legal protections as people,” recording a resounding 64% in favor. A majority, 73%, of Democrats oppose those protections.
The survey, Gallup’s first to ask about IVF opinions, was conducted between May 1 and 23, 2024.
