Matildas young gun Kyra Cooney-Cross linked to Chelsea move alongside Sam Kerr

Matildas breakout star Kyra Cooney-Cross has been linked to a move to European giants Chelsea after her standout performances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Just 18 months after leaving the A-League Women, the 21-year-old is reportedly fielding offers from different clubs, including Sam Kerr’s WSL (Women’s Super League) side, Chelsea.

Formerly with Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers, the midfielder is currently with Swedish side Hammarby IF, a contract which expires in January, leaving her available to join the club of her choice.

UK publication, The Evening Standard, reports “the midfielder is keen to move on after the Swedish season ends in November.”

Speculation has swirled, with many online saying Cooney-Cross has been a long-term target for the Blues.

During the Matildas’ World Cup campaign, there were also whispers of a move to Everton, where fellow Aussie midfielder Clare Wheeler plays.

Manchester United, Juventus and Lyon have all reportedly expressed interest in signing the Aussie star, too.

Cooney-Cross made a name for herself particularly when she became part of a historic moment, winning the Swedish Cup against rivals BK Hacken for the first time in 28 years in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 17,000 fans.

Having appeared at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India, Cooney-Cross impressed at the FIFA Women’s World Cup to well and truly cement her spot in the heart of the Matildas’ midfield.

Following Australia’s heartbreaking semi-finals exit and loss in the bronze medal playoff, Cooney-Cross thanked the fans for their support.

“Experiencing my first World Cup on home soil, with family and friends, was a dream come true,” she said on Instagram.

“Our fans, you were the heartbeat of our journey, your support was our driving force.

“I’m immensely grateful for this experience and for being part of this remarkable team.

“Through the highs and lows, we stood together and created memories that will last a lifetime, and I’m proud that together, we inspired our nation.”
