West Coast CEO Don Pyke speaks out of turn in awkward exchange with Adam Simpson

Departing West Coast coach Adam Simpson has been involved in an awkward exchange with club CEO Don Pyke as they fronted the media to announce Simpson’s departure.

Simpson and club officially parted ways on Tuesday, bringing an end to a 11-year coaching tenure that delivered the club their third premiership in 2018.

But from those lofty heights came the lowest of lows, with club winning just eight times from the past three seasons.

While stressing that it was a mutual decision, Pyke also praised Simpson when he spoke to the media on Tuesday.

“It’s important as we say farewell to Adam that we pay respect to what he has done for our club and recognise the wonderful contribution that he’s made,” Pyke said.

“With that in mind, we’ve requested that Adam coach the side one final time this weekend.”

Pyke added it would be a great if Simpson could “coach one more time” in Liam Ryan’s 100th match against Brisbane before things took an awkward turn.

When Pyke handed over to Simpson, the coach immediately said, “We haven’t made that call yet, Pykey, if I was going to coach this week.”

Pyke then added, “We’d like you to,” to which Simpson said, “thanks mate.”

It remains unclear whether he will coach this weekend or if an assistant will take the reins.

Simpson, who was contracted until the end of next year, said the time was right.

“Obviously, a decision has been made and it’s mutual,” Simpson said.

“I feel like the time’s right.

“I’ve been reasonably stoic over the last few years about the direction of the club, how it’s a slow burn and it’s going to take a bit of time. My position hasn’t changed (on that).

“Someone comes in with energy and gets to grow with the group, I think it’s the right call.”
