Simone Biles is back.
The greatest gymnast in history opened her Paris Games today with an impressive showing at the Women’s Team All-Around qualifiers, leading the U.S. squad (including Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera) to a likely spot in the Finals.
Biles, who faced difficulties in Tokyo with the “twisties” (a mental block of sorts in which gymnasts suffer from disorientation while airborne), showed no such hesitation at the City of Light’s Bercy Arena.
Stepping out in a dazzling gray, almost holographic leotard emblazoned with crystals, Biles’s resolve looked as steely as the hue of her ensemble. She performed, for example, her modified version of the extremely difficult “Yurchenko double pike” on the vault. At the end of the competition, Biles topped her group’s leaderboard with a score of 59.566–a number that would have won the last two world championships.
Like the myriad supernovas on Biles’s suit, so, too, were a number of stars in the stands. Sean White and Nina Dobrev, Jessica Chastain, Tom Cruise, Cynthia Erivo, and Ariana Grande were all in attendance. As was Lady Gaga, fresh off her Opening Ceremony performance as a feathered cabaret songstress, belting and high-kicking along the Seine.
The singer posted a video of Biles’s beam routine, writing: “She nailed it, what an honor to be so close” followed by crying emojis and an American flag. Proof that, right now, even mega-celebrities like Gaga are in the backseat—Biles, deservedly, has the world’s attention.
