Mumbai: A student association has claimed that non-vegetarian food is being restricted at one of the canteens at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. Sharing a post on X(previously Twitter), the IIT Bombay unit of the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a left-leaning organisation, stated that non-vegetarian food was not allowed inside the dining area of ‘Amul Canteen’.
Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) wrote, “The veg purists of @iitbombay are back again! The said canteen does not even have a properly enclosed dining area, still they are obsessed with creating more and more enclosures for the “pure-vegetarians.” #UCinsecurities.”

The institute has several canteens on its premises. As of now, the institute has not issued any statement on the matter. Earlier this month, a private school in Noida’s sector 132 landed in hot water after it issued a circular to the parents, asking them not to pack non-vegetarian food in their ward’s tiffin boxes. However, the diktat triggered an outrage among a section of parents who took to social media, accusing the school authorities of overstepping their boundaries and infringing on the students’ personal choices.
The parents stated that the order felt like an “invasion” of their child’s dietary preferences, even as others agreed with the circular, asserting that the school is not an appropriate place for non-vegetarian food.
