SAN DIEGO (KSWB/KUSI) — Starting Tuesday, McDonald’s customers can snag some nostalgic swag for a limited time.
McDonald’s has dropped a new collector’s meal with limited-edition collectible cups inspired by past collectibles. Just use the McDonald’s app in a restaurant near your or at the drive-thru to buy a Collector’s Meal, which some are referring to as a Happy Meal for adults.
With the purchase of a Sausage McMuffin with Egg sandwich, Hash Brown and Hot Coffee during breakfast hours, or your choice of a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets or a Big Mac sandwich with fries and a soft drink, customers will get one of six new collectible cups:
- Barbie & Hot Wheels
- Beanie Babies
- Coca-Cola
- Hello Kitty & Peanuts
- Shrek, Jurassic Park & Minions
- McDonald’s
Those in LA and New York City also have the chance to take part in a pop-up collector experience.
On Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT, the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles will turn into a “Collector’s Club Poolside Paradise,” with limited-edition drinks inspired by the Collector’s Meal cups, plus a special DJ set. Your collector’s meal cup is your ticket to enter for free. You can also reserve a spot for general admission or a poolside cabana through Eventbrite.
On the other side of the country, Coney Island in NYC is also joining in on the fun on Saturday, Aug. 17, starting at 12 p.m. ET. Use your collector’s meal cup to unlock a free ride on the Phoenix Roller Coaster in Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park.
“We’re bringing back some of our most-loved keepsakes with a twist, giving fans a memory that they can hold in their hands,” said Morgan Flatley, Global Chief Marketing Officer and Head of New Business Ventures at McDonald’s.
Flatley said he hopes it allows fans of the fast food restaurant to create – or revisit – some nostalgic memories.
Take your collectible cups virtual with McDonald’s augmented reality (AR) experience on Snapchat. “Dive into the worlds of the cups” by scanning your cup on Snapchat or visiting McDonald’s Snapchat profile.
McDonald’s, which has been trying to increase recently-sluggish foot traffic in the midst of rising food prices at U.S. fast food restaurants, also rolled out a $5 Meal Deal in June.
“We heard our fans loud and clear — they’re looking for even more great value from us, and this summer that’s exactly what they’ll get,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said in a June 22 statement.
