As we gear up to celebrate the festival of love between brothers and sisters, here are certain dos and don’ts to keep in mind while performing the rituals of Raksha Bandhan 2024.
Raksha Bandhan 2024 is an auspicious Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie thread (rakhi) around the wrists of their brother. Rakhi is considered a symbol of protection, and in return brothers promise to protect their sisters for the rest of their lives. The name of the festival Raksha Bandhan, literally means the bond of protection, obligation or care. Hence, rakhi is a symbol of sister’s prayers, love and affection for brother’s well-being.

This year, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 19, 2024. As we are ready to honour this special occasion, it’s essential to follow certain dos and don’ts to ensure a meaningful and respectful Rakhi ceremony.
Dos
- Make sure that both brothers and sisters cover their heads with a handkerchief, scarf or similar cloth while performing the rakhi rituals.
- Brothers should always face the north or east direction while participating in the Raksha Bandhan rituals. Avoid facing the south direction, as it is believed to have a negative impact.
- Before tying the rakhi, a puja thali must be prepared with auspicious items such as chandhan, sweets, roli, rakhis, diya and a kalash.
- Make sure both siblings continue to cover their heads with a cloth, during the ceremony to honour and respect the tradition.
- After the rakhi is tied, exchange gifts and sweets to express your affection and appreciation.
Don’ts
- Raksha Bandhan is a time for love and harmony. Avoid any conflicts or negative interactions during the celebration. Focus on the positive aspects of your relationship and enjoy the festivities.
- The rakhi should not be tied on the right hand. Make sure that you tie the rakhi on the wrist of the right-hand. Also, make sure that the rakhi ceremony should not be performed during Rahu Kaal or Bhadra as it is extremely inauspicious.
- Don’t wait until the last minute to purchase the rakhi or other necessary puja items. Keep everything ready beforehand. Even if you’re in rush, don’t skip the essential raksha bandhan rituals.
- Don’t gift sharp objects to your siblings. Opt for those presents that reflect your siblings’ interests and add a personal touch to the celebration.
- Be mindful of any family-specific traditions that may be part of the Rakhi ceremony. Respect these customs to honour your family values.
