Why is Teachers' Day Celebrated? Know The History And Significance of 'Shikshak Divas'

Teachers’ Day 2024:  A teacher makes an incomparable contribution to a student’s life, from teaching priceless information and making learning enjoyable to pointing them in the proper direction. Teachers’ Day is thus observed annually on September 5 in India as a way to honour and celebrate educators. The second President of India and its first Vice-President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, was born on this day as well. His students held him in high regard due to his charismatic nature. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the one who proposed that teachers mark their birthdays as Teachers’ Day to a gathering of excited students.

A teacher has a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a significant and lasting difference in the lives of their students. They help create sustainable futures and offer personal fulfilment. UNESCO designated October 5, 1994, as World Teachers’ Day to appreciate and recognize the influence that teachers have on our lives.

Teachers’ Day History And Significance

This day honours educators everywhere and recognizes their role in influencing students’ futures. The International Festival commemorates the year that the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) adopted their 1966 recommendation about the status of teachers. The UNESCO recommendation aided in the establishment of benchmarks for the rights and obligations of educators as well as requirements for their initial training, continuing education, hiring, and working conditions.

Establishing fundamental principles regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, benchmarks for their initial and ongoing education, policies for hiring teachers, job conditions, and the calibre of teaching and learning environments are the main goals of the recommendation.
