Jimmy Barnes provides sad health update, withdraws from Maldives show

Rock legend Jimmy Barnes has officially withdrawn from a music festival in the Maldives on doctor’s orders.

The 68-year-old — whose well-documented recent health battles have seen him in and out of hospital in the past year — revealed he is “tethered to a drip … 24 hours a day”.

In an Instagram video on Friday night, Barnes apologised that he “can’t be with everybody in the Maldives this next coming week” for the Stranded in the Maldives celebration at Kandooma Resort until September 11.

Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, Troy Cassar-Daley and Mahalia Barnes are all due to perform as planned.

“My family are all en route to the Maldives as we speak … You’re going to have all my family singing for you, it’s going to be really great,” he continued.

“I’ve got a bit of FOMO actually that I’m not there, and if I wasn’t tethered to a drip, I’m on a drip 24 hours a day — I would be there swimming in the sea and singing songs on the beach for you.

“But in the meantime, I’m having a party by myself.”

Alongside the clip, he wrote: “I’m not allowed far from home, Dr’s orders so have an extra good time for me”.

Barnes had open-heart surgery last December due to a serious bacterial infection and had returned to the stage at Bluesfest in March before a hip injury earlier in August put him back under the knife.

“I’ve got some bad news, unfortunately. I had a twinge in my hip when I was leaving Dunedin on Thursday morning and by late last night the pain was unbearable so I went off to hospital,” he wrote at the time.

“The doctors have recommended a remedial medical procedure ASAP followed by some physio to address the issue.

“Providing all goes to plan, I’m expected to make a full recovery in six weeks.”

The former Cold Chisel frontman’s solo shows in August and September were also postponed as a result.
