Tesla: Tesla faces federal probe as electric cars underachieve advertised KMs per charge

The federal prosecutors in the US have opened a probe into Tesla, after multiple reports that the company’s electric cars are not achieving the advertised range on a single charge, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
The investigation comes after a Reuters report in July that found that Tesla cars often fail to achieve their advertised range estimates. The report was based on inputs from more than 30 current and former Tesla employees, as well as experts who have tested or studied Tesla vehicles.

The experts said that Tesla’s range estimates are often inaccurate, and that the company’s algorithms are designed to overestimate the range of its vehicles, which is displayed on the dashboard.
The probe is in its early stages and may not involve charges at the moment. The Austin-based manufacturer is also facing several other probes, including the federal auto safety regulators’ probe into its ADAS suite.
On the other hand, the talks between Elon Musk and India have been said to have escalated after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US. There’s a possibility that the EV maker might set up a manufacturing facility soon on our shores. In the growing developments around the same, the company also leased an office space in Pune, fueling the speculations of its arrival in India.
As Tesla’s global rivals, Great Wall Motors and BYD face scrutiny in India, it is advantageous for Tesla to enter the world’s third-largest automobile market. Musk, following his meeting with Modi, said “He (Modi) really cares about India because he’s pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something we intend to do.”
