The Delhi Capitals are undergoing a significant restructuring, appointing Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket, while Sourav Ganguly is set to play a pivotal role in the IPL 2025 auction and will return to the position in 2027, with Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav likely to be retained, despite uncertainty around Pant’s captaincy.
New Delhi: The ownership structure of the Delhi Capitals has led to a significant reshuffling of the franchise’s backroom staff. With the GMR Group taking charge for the next two years until IPL 2026, they have appointed former India all-rounder Venugopal Rao as the new Director of Cricket. This change means that Sourav Ganguly, who held the position until IPL 2024, will not oversee the team for the next two IPL seasons. However, there remains a possibility of Ganguly participating in some capacity during the IPL auction.
According to a report by ABP Ananda, Sourav Ganguly is set to be present at the Delhi Capitals’ table during the IPL 2025 mega auction. He will play a crucial role in determining which players the team will acquire for the next three years, as well as deciding which players will be retained ahead of the auction.
The report further states that Sourav Ganguly will be reinstated as the Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals starting from IPL 2027, when the Parth Jindal-owned JSW Group resumes management of the franchise. Recently, he was appointed as the Director of Cricket at the JSW Group. In addition to his future role with the Delhi Capitals, Ganguly will continue to oversee operations for the Delhi Capitals WPL team and the Pretoria Capitals franchise at SA20.
According to a report by The Times of India, the Delhi Capitals are aiming to retain three key players from Team India: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav. However, the report also indicates that Pant may not be retained as captain for the upcoming season, particularly following his cryptic post on X, where he hinted at the possibility of leaving the Delhi Capitals and entering the auction.
