TOKYO: Responding to the urgent and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Lebanon, the government of Japan has taken a decisive step by extending an emergency grant of USD 10 million, as announced by the Foreign Ministry on October 21.

With this Emergency Grant, Japan will implement humanitarian assistance in essential supplies, shelter, and food through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and other organizations.

The Ministry reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to peace by announcing its continued call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. In a bid to prevent further deterioration of the situation, Japan urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to make sincere efforts for a diplomatic settlement.

The Implementing agencies, disbursement amount and areas of assistance include United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR): Shelter, Non-Food Items [USD 5 million,] United Nations World Food Programme (WFP): Food [USD 2 million,] United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) [USD 1 million] and International Organization for Migration (IOM): Site Management and Coordination, Non-Food Items [USD 1 million].

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC): Health and Medical Services will get [USD 1 million], according to the Ministry.
