When is Govardhan puja? Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut, is an auspicious Hindu festival. This festival occurs on the day following Diwali and is dedicated to Lord Krishna, commemorating his act of lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the inhabitants of Vrindavan from torrential rains.

According to Drik Panchang, the Pratipada tithi begins  at 06:16 PM on Nov 01, 2024 and the Pratipada tithi Ends around 08:21 PM on Nov 02, 2024.

All about Govardhan Puja 2024

According to Hindu mythology, the residents of Vrindavan, including the cowherd community, were accustomed to worshipping Indra, the king of gods, to ensure good rainfall for their crops.  Lord Krishna, in his childhood, advised the villagers to stop worshipping Indra and instead worship Govardhan Hill, which provided them with sustenance through its natural resources.

Angered by this, Indra unleashed heavy rains and floods upon Vrindavan. In response, Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill with his little finger, providing shelter to the villagers and their cattle.
Realising Krishna’s divine powers, Indra eventually acknowledged Krishna’s supremacy and ceased the storm, leading to the celebration of Govardhan Puja.

The festival symbolises the triumph of devotion and faith over arrogance and pride. It emphasizes the importance of nature and the need to respect and protect it. The festival fosters a sense of community as families and neighbors come together to prepare special offerings. The preparation of a large variety of vegetarian dishes, known as “Annakut,” symbolises abundance and gratitude.

Govardhan Puja is marked by vibrant celebrations, including the decoration of the Govardhan mound with flowers, food offerings, and traditional songs and dances. This festive atmosphere enhances communal harmony and joy.
