Currently, the mobile data company boasts more than 130 million 5G users, holding over 85 percent of the 5G radio cells in the country.
Reliance Jio has established itself as the world’s largest data company, carrying 8 percent of global data traffic and positioning India as the largest data market, according to Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). During the 47th annual general meeting (AGM) of RIL held in August, Ambani announced that the telecom operator has successfully completed its nationwide rollout of 5G and is targeting the addition of 1 million new customers to its home broadband service each month.
With 490 million customers, Jio’s average monthly data usage exceeds 30 GB per user, leading to a 33 percent increase in the company’s data traffic over the past year. Furthermore, Jio Platforms (JPL), the parent company overseeing Jio and other digital ventures within the Reliance group, ranks among the top 12 companies in India by net profit. In the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1FY25), JPL reported a year-on-year net profit growth of 11.7 percent, reaching Rs 5,698 crore, fueled by strong subscriber growth.
Jio’s 5G rollout has been among the fastest in the world, with 85 percent of the 5G radio cells in India connected to the Jio network. In just two years, Jio has successfully attracted 130 million customers to its 5G service.
A significant contributor to Jio’s success in 5G technology is its fully indigenous 5G infrastructure, designed to meet the demands of Indian mobile users on a national scale. Jio stands out as the only operator in India with a standalone 5G architecture, utilizing advanced technologies such as carrier aggregation and network slicing to optimize the benefits of 5G.
Additionally, JioAirFiber, the company’s 5G-based home Wi-Fi service launched in October of last year, quickly gained traction, reaching 1 million customers within the first six months and adding another million in just 100 days thereafter.
Mukesh Ambani also spoke of Jio’s reach in the home services sector, with the company’s broaband, streaming and digital TV services expanding across the country. “We have also made significant strides in home services, with nearly 30 million homes customers across our digital broadband services and digital TV services. This makes us one of the largest digital home services providers globally,”Ambani said.”Among business users, over a million small and medium businesses in India have embraced Jio,” he added, saying that Jio was “proud to be the trusted partner for over 80% of the top 5000 large enterprises in the country.”
