Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon may face delays in satellite spectrum services after DoT's major demand..

Satellite internet services from Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon may face delays. The Department of Telecommunications has requested compliance with formalities from both companies.

A few days ago, the Center sought suggestions from stakeholders regarding spectrum allocation and pricing. The Center will soon begin the allocation of satellite spectrum.

The DoT has asked Starlink and Amazon to fulfill security-related requirements. It has also approved Airtel’s Eutelsat Onweb and Jio’s SES satellite services. Additionally, the DoT has requested both companies to submit the necessary documents related to security parameters.

According to a report from the Economic Times, the DoT has asked Starlink and Amazon to submit information related to security compliance. The DoT has written letters to both companies, and a senior official stated that they will wait for their responses. If the companies fail to submit the documents, reminders will be sent. If both companies accept the conditions, their applications will be forwarded for further processing.

The official stated that there are certain areas sensitive to security concerns, making it necessary for the companies to share documents related to data and coverage areas. Once these are submitted, the government will permit them to start their services in India. Elon Musk applied for Global Mobile Personal Communication Satellite Service (GMPCS) in 2022, while Amazon submitted its application last year.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is gathering feedback from stakeholders regarding spectrum pricing and other conditions.
