(NEXSTAR) — Even though you’ve always been able to look up the voting history of any American, a new website tool is making it easier to find out if your friends are telling the truth about getting to the polls. The tool, DidMyFriendsVote.org, is taking off on TikTok and Instagram — just in time for the 2024 presidential election.
The streamlined tool requires four pieces of information: your friends’ first name, last name, age range and city/state.
From there, you’ll sift through results of people with matching (or similar) names and then be able to find voting history through the years for each person.
According to the website, the DidMyFriendsVote team developed the tool to “increase public awareness of the importance of voting and encourage everyone to vote.” The site’s clean aesthetic and ease of use is making it a hit among younger people, especially those in Gen Z.
The site explains that while its data — powered by publicly available voter histories — are “accurate for most people,” there may be information gaps for some people. For instance, those who have moved recently may have conflicting (or no) information available. Additionally, finding the correct voter can also be difficult if a name is common in a certain state.
It’s important to note that while whether you voted in any year can always be accessed legally by anyone, who you voted for is always private.
The organization says that its data will be updated both before and after the Nov. 5 election.
