Mukesh Ambani vs Elon Musk: Reliance urges TRAI to review Starlink's reach before...

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has urged telecom regulatory TRAI to review the reach of Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper before allocating satellite broadband spectrum to them.

According to the news agency Reuters, Mukesh Ambani has written a letter to TRAI and Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, requesting their intervention in the matter.

According to reports, Mukesh Ambani has raised objections to the administrative allocation of satellite broadband spectrum. He and Airtel’s Sunil Mittal believe that the spectrum should be allocated through an auction, a stance opposed by Starlink CEO Elon Musk.

The satellite broadband spectrum does not include provisions for individual or home users. Reliance has stated that the auction process would provide domestic telecom operators the opportunity to compete with international companies, which is in the best interest of the industry.

The company stated that there is an environment of uncertainty. Despite prioritizing spectrum allocation, it said that none of the domestic players will ever be able to establish their own geostationary stations.

Notably, the Centre has clarified that the allocation of satellite broadband spectrum will be done administratively, and there will be no auction. However, the government has stated that it will not be free.
