Kamala Harris: What's next in the vice president's political career?

(NewsNation) — It’s been three weeks since Election Day, and despite her loss, Vice President Kamala Harris appears to still be fundraising, reportedly telling advisers she’s staying in the fight and exploring her political options.

Harris and her former running mate, Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will host a call Tuesday to thank top donors and possibly lay the foundation for her path forward in politics.

What’s in store for Kamala Harris’ political future?

The invitation to the call with the National Finance Committee stated, “Your support and leadership made this campaign possible, and the Vice President and Governor Walz are looking forward to having the opportunity to reconnect and express their appreciation for your partnership and support.”

Harris has been telling her advisers to keep her options open. That could include another presidential bid in 2028 or throwing her hat in the ring to replace California Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose term is up in 2026. A recent poll from the University of California’s Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and the Los Angeles Times suggests that nearly half of California voters would support Harris if she were to enter the race.

What have other former presidential candidates done?

Democratic strategists who spoke to NewsNation’s partner The Hill said Harris has built a following she could maintain beyond the election. Her campaign website makes a similar declaration, “Our fight continues,” written in large text above a request for donations.

Historically, candidates who lost the presidential race have taken the back seat while remaining somewhat active in their party.

If Harris were to go that route, it could chart her career long-term.
