Gill’s fifth ODI century came under tremendous pressure as the chips were down for India in the 266 chase but the 24-year-old batter single-handedly kept his team on course with a stunning knock.
However, Gill’s efforts turned out to be not enough to take India to the finish line with Bangladesh managing to eke out a six-run victory.
The right-handed opening batter achieved more accolades during his innings becoming the first player to score 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023. He is also the first batter with five plus international hundreds in 2023.
Gill perished in a bid to accelerate India’s chase as the asking rate kept on zooming. His innings ended at 121 when he was caught by Towhid Hridoy at long off off Mahedi Hasan.
Gill’s 133-ball knock was laced with 8 fours and 5 sixes.
The second-ranked ODI batter Gill also became the highest run-scorer in the Asia Cup, amassing 275 runs in five innings at an average of 68.75, including a couple of fifties and a hundred.
