F1 2023: Singapore GP Qualifying shocker! Sainz takes Pole, Red Bull struggles

For the 15th round of the 2023 season, Formula One heads to the 4.940 km long Marina Bay Street Circuit for the Singapore Grand Prix. For the first time in the season, all three Practice sessions were led by Scuderia Ferrari. Also for the first time since this year’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, current Championship leader Max Verstappen did not make it to the third Qualifying, with Carlos Sainz starting on his second consecutive Pole.
Here’s how the three rounds went down at the 2023 Singapore GP Qualifying –

Lance Stroll’s nasty crash in the dying moments of the first Qualifying resulted in the end to his as well as others’ session a bit earlier than planned, with Red Flag out. Fortunately, the Canadian walked out unhurt. With a lot of drivers not able to complete their fastest lap, Yuki Tsunoda finished on first, Sergio Perez on second, Nico Hulkenberg took third. Liam Lawson and Kevin Magnussen were 4th and 5th fastest in Q1 respectively.

Valtteri Bottas, Oscar Piastri, Logan Sargeant, and Zhou Guanyu were eliminated in the first Qualifying after not being able to set their fastest lap, and will be lining up from P16 to P19 tomorrow.

The second Qualifying was a shocker with both Red Bull cars not able to make it to the top 10! Carlos Sainz went fastest with a lap time of 1:31.439, ahead of George Russell in second and Fernando Alonso in third. Magnussen was fourth fastest, while Lando Norris took P5. Reigning Champion Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon, and Yuki Tsunoda did not make it to Q3. Liam Lawson was the only one of the four Red Bull drivers making it to the final qualifying.

Carlos Sainz was the fastest in Q3, with a lap time of 1:30.984, with Russell just +0.072 seconds behind on second! Charles Leclerc takes P3, and will be starting tomorrow’s GP on the second row alongside Norris. Hamilton took fifth, with Magnussen on sixth and Alonso on seventh. Esteban Ocon, Hulkenberg and Lawson will be lining up on 8th, 9th and 10th respectively.
