Adelaide family’s beloved property sells for ‘whopping’ price decades after decades of turning down offers

An Adelaide family’s estate in the northern suburbs has sold at auction for about $3 million over the asking price.

The 1.2ha property at 95-101 Winzor St, Salisbury was tightly held by the one family for 60 years but, after the death of both parents, the children had decided to put it up for sale.

Harris Real Estate agent Tom Hector said the family had been approached numerous times over 30 years by developers wanting to buy the estate but they had always refused to sell.

When the property was recently listed for expressions of interest, Hector said he was getting up to 15 calls a day.

On Tuesday, it finally sold at an auction — attended by 100 people — for a “whopping $5.5 million”, Hector said.

“It’s something we never though was possible but, as we’ve all spoken about since COVID began, there’s been such a supply shortage of land, especially in the norther corridor of Adelaide,” he said.

Hector said it was an extremely emotional sale for the family, who in signing the contract noted the joy they had experienced living in the home with their parents.

“They were very, very, very happy with the result but at the end of the day we all had good inklings it was going to sell for a good price but probably not the price of $5.5 million,” Hector said.

House prices in Salisbury, 13km north of Adelaide CBD, have increased 22 per cent in the past 12 months, with the median house price $610,000.

The Winzor St block has a three-bedroom family home built in 1955, which is around the corner from both Riverdale and Salisbury Downs Primary Schools.

It is also a few minutes away from two shopping centres, a bus and a train interchange as well as a highway connected to the western suburbs and city.

Hector said the developer plans to subdivide the block into 30–40 allotments that would be released over several stages.
