Alameda councilmember found drunk, hospitalized during League of California Cities conference

Alameda City Councilmember Trish Spencer required medical attention after being found intoxicated near Pine Avenue in Long Beach early Friday morning while attending a League of California Cities conference, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Spencer was in Long Beach as a representative for the city of Alameda, which paid for travel, lodging, and registration fees for her to attend the meeting and interact with other cities’ representatives.

At 12:12 a.m. on Friday, Long Beach Police and fire personnel responded to an intoxicated woman near the intersection of Pine Avenue and Broadway in downtown Long Beach, according to LBPD Public Information Officer Richard Mejia.

Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital where she was given medical treatment. Long Beach Police Department treated the incident as a medical emergency and not a criminal act, Mejia said. He could not provide information about any injuries sustained by Spencer.

Spencer did not respond to requests for comment by Bay Area News Group by the publication of this article, nor did other members of the Alameda City Council.

Friday’s incident is not the first controversy that Spencer has faced involving alcohol. Her husband, Joel Spencer, sued the city of Alameda and its police department after he was arrested on the charge of DUI on St. Patrick’s Day in 2016. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, and later sought compensation for character defamation, bodily injuries, and the costs of the criminal proceeding.
