Albanese government threatens social media giants with $50 million fines under proposed reforms

Social media platforms that don’t comply with the Albanese Government’s new crackdown on the sector, including an age limit of 16, will be fined up to $50 million.

The government will introduce a bill to parliament on Thursday to enforce age restrictions on big tech platforms, after a concerted push by parents, the opposition and media outlets to protect children from harm.

The laws will require social media platforms to take steps to prevent young people under the age of 16 from having an account, as well as major penalties of up to $50 million for companies that breach the legislation, as well as violations of new industry codes and standards.

However, some sites will be exempt, as the Communications Minister will have powers to exclude specific services from the laws, including messaging services, online games, and services that function for health and education purposes.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says the Albanese Government is introducing “world-leading” legislation to establish 16 as the minimum age for access to social media.

“This reform is about protecting young people and letting parents know we’ve got their backs,” she said.

“Social media has a social responsibility for the safety and mental health of young Australians.

“The legislation places the onus on social media platforms, not parents or children, to ensure protections are in place.

“Ultimately, this is about supporting a safer and healthier online environment for young Australians.”
