Despite bearing Walt Disney’s name, the museum is not owned or operated by the Walt Disney Company. Instead, it’s a nonprofit organization founded by Walt Disney’s heirs, established by Disney’s daughter Diane Disney Miller. This independence allows the museum to present a comprehensive and uncensored view of Walt’s life and legacy.

Why is the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco?

Despite Disney’s strong association with Southern California, the choice of San Francisco for the museum’s location was largely influenced by Walt’s daughter. She resided in the Bay Area and envisioned the museum as a tribute to her father’s life and work in a city famed for its cultural diversity and rich artistic heritage.
