Another Indian Student Found Dead Under Mysterious Circumstances In US, 7th Incident This Year

In yet another tragic incident at Purdue University, an Indian student, Sameer Kamath, has been found dead. This comes shortly after the death of Neel Archarya, causing concern among the student community. Sameer Kamath, 23 years old, was discovered dead in the woods at the Niches Land Trust on Monday evening.  According to reports from the Journal and Courier, Kamath’s lifeless body was found around 5 PM local time at Crow’s Grove Nature Preserve in Williamsport. The exact cause of his death is yet to be determined, and the investigation is currently underway.

Kamath is the fourth Indian-American student who has been found dead in US in less than two weeks. At least seven Indian-origin students have been found dead or killed in the US so far in 2024.

As per The Purdue Exponent, Kamath was from Massachusetts. He completed his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and came to Purdue in the summer of 2021. Kamath was set to finsih his doctoral programme in 2025.

The Purdue University community is mourning the loss of another promising student, and condolences are pouring in from all corners. The university administration is working closely with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.

A report in the student-run The Exponent said that his department head confirmed the death. An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing, said the report.

List of Indian students found dead in US

  1. Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a student at the Linder School of Business in Ohio, died. Authorities have ruled out any foul play or a possibility of a hate crime in the case.
  2. On 30 January, another Purdue University student, Neel Acharya, who was missing in the US, was confirmed dead by authorities of the varsity.
  3. Another Indian student Akul Dhawan, was found dead outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) earlier in January. The autopsy of the 18-year-old suggested that he died from hypothermia.
  4. G Dinesh (22) from Wanaparthy in Telangana and Nikesh (21) from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh – were found dead under suspicious conditions at their Connecticut accommodation on 15 January. The duo had gone to the US for higher education in December last year. Their families do not know how the students, who were roommates, died.
  5. On 29 January, a resident of Haryana, 25-year-old Vivek Saini, who was pursuing an MBA are worked part-time at a convenience store, was fatally attacked in Georgia state’s Lithonia city by Julian Faulkner. Faulkner, a homeless man, allegedly killed Saini with repeated blows from a hammer inside the store. As per reports, the student refused to give Faulkner free food on 16 January which had led to the attack.
  6.  Sameer Kamath is the 7th such case. He was found dead in a nature preserve. Kamath was pursuing a doctorate in mechanical engineering at Purdue University. He had completed his master’s degree in the same field from Purdue University in August 2023 and held a US citizenship, the Warren County Coroner’s office said.
