Atomos has unveiled the latest generation of its monitor/recorders, the Ninja and Ninja Ultra. The form factor and 5.2-inch 1920×1080-pixel touchscreen of the new models is identical to the Ninja and Ninja+—which bodes well for compatibility with existing underwater housings—but there are various under-the-hood upgrades. The Ninja and Ninja Ultra run on a new operating system, AtomOS 11, which is faster and boasts new features, including EL Zone exposure referenced colorized image, ARRI False Color, and new scheduled playback and recording tools.

The most significant difference between the two models (apart from price) is recording resolution: The Ninja Ultra can capture up to 8K/30p ProRes RAW, while the Ninja maxes out at 6K/30p ProRes RAW. In addition, the Ninja Ultra can record ProRes RAW up to 4K/60p while at the same time recording HD/60p to H.265. It also supports automatic matching filenames, timecodes and record from ARRI, Canon and RED cameras, with more cameras supported in the future.

With both models, Apple ProRes and Apple ProRes RAW are available free of charge, as is H.265, which was previously only available as a paid option. The Apple ProRes codec comes pre-activated, while the Apple ProRes RAW and H.265 codecs must be activated via the Atomos website through a token system. Also included without charge is Avid’s DNxHD codec, which must also be activated online.

Shipping from early September, the Ninja and Ninja Ultra are priced at $600 and $800, respectively.
