Initial reactions and observations
- That game was complete chaos and the scoreline is hard to interpet. On the one hand, Bayern Munich definitely did not create enough chances to merit three goals scored. On the other, Augsburg’s scoring stats are inflated by the penalty they converted, and so will their xG. On the balance, who deserved to win? That’ll be up to personal interpretation.
- Another game, another host of injuries. This time it’s Kingsley Coman and (potentially) Aleksandar Pavlović. Is Bayern Munich paying the blood price for each win?
- Jamal Musiala is such a prodigious talent, but he overcomplicated things in the final third. When faced with the choice of passing, shooting, or dribbling, he chooses to dribble way too often. Harry Kane needs more service, and as the team’s man attacking midfielder, Musiala should be providing it.
- Has there been a breakdown in discipline at Bayern Munich? So many fouls and cards today, and general sloppy play. Now Sané and De Ligt are both at risk of suspension.
Full time: Bayern Munich somehow manage to win.
90’+3’ — Goal. Demirović makes it 3-2 thanks to a penalty, conceded by Thomas Müller in the box.
87’ — Penalty! Manuel Neuer makes a silly foul in the box and VAR has given it!

60’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Harry Kane makes it 3-1! Long VAR review to get to this point.
52’ — Goal. Augsburg make it 2-1 right after the break. Somehow, Harry Kane was the defender on that attack.
45’ — The second half is underway!
Halftime: Bayern Munich lead 2-0.
45’+5’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Alphonso Davies makes it 2-0!
25’ — GOOOOOOOOOOAL! Pavlović makes it 1-0! But Coman seems injured and has to come off. Mathys Tel comes on to replace him.
13’ — Offside! Augsburg score but VAR rules it out. Bayern are being saved by the video ref today.
5’ — De Ligt appears to handle the ball, and the ref whistles for a penalty. However, VAR rules it out and changes it to a free kick. Yellow for MDL.
Kickoff: We’re underway!
One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! Bayern Munich will be playing in a standard 4-2-3-1, with Raphaël Guerreiro moved to right-back due to all the injuries. Aleksandar Pavlović starts in place of Joshua Kimmich in midfield, and Eric Dier makes his debut! Meanwhile, Thomas Müller has been benched yet again. A little bit disappointing, but not unexpected.
A week ago, Bayern Munich had a nearly full squad (barring a couple of players on international duty) with only a scant few injuries, none of them being starters. So much can change in a week, huh?
Now, Thomas Tuchel finds himself without Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, and Konrad Laimer. All three would have started this game if fit. The team has zero natural right-backs heading into this game, and the last two performances (a 0-1 loss to Werder Bremen and a 1-0 win over Union Berlin) did not inspire confidence. FC Augsburg are a team that pushes Bayern Munich even when times are good, which they are most definitely not at the moment. Can the players find a way to win and narrow the gap to Leverkusen further?
