Aussie superstars Ariarne Titmus and Mollie O’Callaghan have set the scene for an explosive showdown after both progressed in the 200m freestyle at the Olympics.

O’Callaghan cruised through her heat in a time of 1:55.79 to set the fastest time going into the semi-finals.

Titmus, fresh off her gold medal in the 400m freestyle, appeared to hold back a bit as she finished second behind Canadian Mary-Sophie Harvey.

But Titmus still clocked a time of 1:56.23, which was the third fastest overall.

The pair will feature again in the semi-finals on Monday morning ahead of a likely showdown in the final on Tuesday morning.

Aussie pair through to semis

Maximillian Giuliani and Thomas Neill booked their spot in the semis and look on track to make the final of the 200m freestyle.

Giuliani won his heat in a time of 1:46.15 to set the fifth-fastest time.

Neil finished fifth in his blockbuster heat that featured three of the top four times, but did enough to set the ninth-best time with a 1:46.27.
