Austin Powers star and Queen Elizabeth lookalike Jeannette Charles dead at 96

A British actress who traded on her likeness to Queen Elizabeth has died — at the same age as the monarch she was often mistaken for.

Jeannette Charles was best known for her roles as the Queen in the 2002 Austin Powers’ movie Goldmember and the 1998 film Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad.

Charles died aged 96 in a care home in the British county of Essex on Sunday.

Her cause of death was not confirmed by her family.

“Mum was a real character and a force of nature. She had an amazing life,” Charles’ daughter Carol Christophi said in a tribute.

“She was always respectful of the Queen and adored the Royal Family. We will miss her dearly.”

When the actress first began her career pursuits, she struggled to secure roles because of her likeness to Queen Elizabeth.

In 1972, she had a portrait commissioned as a gift to her husband and it was displayed at the Royal Academy in London.

Spectators assumed the portrait was of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

The likeness was so close that the portrait went on to be disqualified, as entries were supposed to be of real-life people sitting in person for a portrait.

After the truth of Charles’ identity was revealed, her name made headlines worldwide and sparked the attention of casting directors.

The actress then focused on nailing her impression of the Queen and went on to land the role of the Queen in the 1976 film Leos Leiden.

She went on to act in at least nine more movies — in the role of Queen Elizabeth in all but one of the films.

Those in which she played the Queen included National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985) and the 1998 hit The Parent Trap, although her scene was deleted.

Her most notable role was of the Queen in the 2002 Austin Powers hit spoof, Goldmember.

Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2002, aged 96.
