Australian Olympic swimmer Leisel Jones splits from husband Damon Martin

Australian Olympic gold medal swimmer Leisel Jones has split from her husband Damon Martin.

The former athlete, 38, confirmed the “sad situation”, after five years of marriage, on her Triple M radio show.

“I have the deepest respect for Damo. It’s a very sad situation for both of us and a very hard decision to come to,” she said on Wednesday morning.

“I think it takes a lot of bravery for two grown-ups to decide what’s not right for them at a certain time and to realise that you are better off going separate ways.

“So it is a very sad announcement, and I’m out in the wilderness on my own.”

The couple wed in August 2018 in a ceremony in Bowral, in the NSW Southern Highlands, less than a year after they confirmed their engagement.

Jones continued: “I’m actually okay. We had done a lot of work beforehand, we put a lot of effort in.”

Listing what she already misses about her former partner, the radio host said she “can’t cook my chops as well as Damo used to do, and I miss that”.

Jones went on to detail the “frightening” reality of wanting children and the adjustment she has undergone.

“I’m conscious I am 38, I am now single, and I don’t have any children and I might have missed that window,” the former swimmer said.

“So that’s a little frightening.”

“It’s a really big adjustment to do things on your own. Damo is a such a wonderful guy, a great guy.

“We are both extremely heartbroken.”

The former couple met in 2016 and were engaged the following year while overseas.

“WE’RE ENGAGED,” Jones wrote at the time, posting a photo from Brooklyn, New York.

“Damo popped the question while we were in The States.

“I can’t wait to annoy the hell out of you for the rest of our eternal lives. Love you.”
