Awkward moment Prince Harry mistaken for Prince William in social media post by wife of 1980s pop legend Richard Marx

Prince Harry appears to have been mistaken for his brother Prince William at a charity event in California on Friday.

King Charles’ younger son attended the annual One805Live! concert at Kevin Costner’s seaside estate, while his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stayed home due to illness.

During the event, the Duke of Sussex presented an award to local pilot Loren Courtney, quipping that both felt more at ease flying helicopters than speaking on stage.

“As you’ve probably heard already, 22 years (of) military service over 10,000 hours and rarely sees his family because he’s always here flying helicopters,” Prince Harry said of Courtney.

The concert celebrated the bravery of Santa Barbara’s first responders and featured performances and appearances by various stars including Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges, Pink and 1980s pop star Richard Marx.

After his set, Marx briefly spoke with Harry, as seen in footage shared by his wife, Daisy Fuentes.

In a mix-up, Daisy initially tagged the official Instagram account for Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, @princeandprincessofwales, instead of Harry.

She later corrected and reposted the photo, tagging a fan-run account called “Prince Harry of England.”

Harry has not used Instagram since the @SussexRoyal account was inactive after he and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020, and made the move from the UK to the US, where they now reside with their children Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

In another moment, Richard nearly missed recognising Harry when he walked past him, as seen in footage from the video player above.

Backstage staff had to prompt Richard, who then acknowledged the prince with a friendly, “Hey! Well done.”

Last year, Meghan attended the same charity event and had been expected to come along this year but was at home unwell, a source told The Mirror.

“We were all hoping Meghan would attend like she did last year but the word is that she is sick and could not make it,” the source said.

Other A-listers who attended and presented awards were Cameron Diaz and Zoe Saldana.

“There’s nothing quite like a party in Kevin Costner’s backyard,” Diaz joked when presenting her award.

Meanwhile Saldana joked, referencing Costner’s 1992 film The Bodyguard, “Does anybody need a bodyguard?”

Also at the weekend, Harry spoke at the World Health Organisation dinner in New York, where he mingled with notable figures including Queen Mathilde of Belgium and actor Forest Whitaker, ahead of the UN General Assembly.

The prince is also set to meet with conservation group African Parks, landmine charity The Halo Trust and Travalyst while in New York.

He is also scheduled to be in the UK for an event on September 30.
