The Muslim Consumers’ Rights Council alleged that certain restaurants avoid serving beef as they are allegedly aligned with ideologies opposite to Muslim consumer preferences.
Calling for a boycott of restaurants which are not serving beef, the Muslim Consumers’ Rights Council on Tuesday organised a rally for the same in Bangladesh ‘s Bangshal area, according to a report published in The Dhaka Tribune.
Protesters threatened that any restaurant that does not include beef dishes on the menu will face potential closure.
The Muslim Consumers’ Rights Council alleged that certain restaurants avoid serving beef as they are allegedly aligned with ideologies opposite to Muslim consumer preferences.
While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Council’s convener Muhammad Arif Al Khabir said beef serves as a symbol of Muslim identity. He pulled up Western countries for their hypocrisy over not allowing halal foods in their restaurants.
The rally was organised amid atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh after the country witnessed a political turmoil. According to Bangladesh authorities, as many as 88 incidents of violence took place on minorities, especially Hindus, since Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina’s regime was overturned in August.
Interim government head Muhammad Yunus’ press secretary, Shafiqul Alam said that 70 people have been arrested in connection with the violent incidents.
Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri recently visited Bangladesh and met Muhammad Yunus. He raised concerns over attacks on Hindus in the country. He urged for measures to ensure safety and protection of the minority communities in the country.
