Costco is garnering attention for carrying a coveted item people wait up to 12 years to get their hands on.
Earlier this month, a post on Reddit suggested that Newark’s newly opened Costco store carried a rare bottle of cabernet sauvignon from the winery Screaming Eagle. The Napa Valley winery is known among wine enthusiasts for its limited 500-case production per year; customers can wait up to 12 years to get a bottle by joining online waitlists, according to Tasting Table. Nevertheless, people are willing to wait, and pay more than $3,600 per bottle on average for the cabernet, according to VinePair.
Your chances of jumping to the top of the line might be easier if you’re a Costco member, but even that won’t come without challenges. Due to the limited supply, only a few select Bay Area Costco stores are carrying the rare cabernet.

SFGATE called Costco stores around the Bay Area and found that the Newark, Redwood City, Foster City, Santa Clara, Danville, Novato and San Jose stores still have a very limited amount in stock. Most Bay Area stores only had one bottle in stock, though Redwood City and Santa Clara had two available. Foster City may be an oenophile’s best bet: There were three bottles available as of Monday afternoon, according to a sales associate at Costco.
Screaming Eagle Winery was founded by former real estate agent Jean Phillips in 1986. In 1992, the winery bottled its first cabernet sauvignon, which was given a 99-point rating by wine critic Robert Parker. SFGATE reached out to Screaming Eagle for comment but did not hear back by publication time. SFGATE also reached out to Costco for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
