Heritage clothing is big business in the modern fashion sector and nowhere more so than in outdoor-wear. Now major British name Berghaus is tapping into that trend and it has some even bigger names on board to support its latest launch.
The almost-60-year-old brand is updating three key pieces for its new Icons collection and campaign and two famous fans — Liam Gallagher and Sir Chris Bonnington — are fronting the move.
The current Icons offer is built around the Trango, the Mera Peak and the Lumley jackets that “have all been refined and updated for the summits and streets of 2024, but their souls are decades old”.
They’re priced between £275/€300 and £400/€450 and are available at Berghaus.com, Selfridges, HIP, Fat Buddha, Size?, Working Class Heroes and internationally at Storm Store, GOODS, Norse Projects, Anson’s, and Zalando.
In the 1980s and 90s Berghaus designs were embraced by British mountaineer Bonington, who wore Berghaus when he reached the summit of Everest 40 years ago, as did Alan Hinkes, the first British mountaineer to summit all of the world’s mountains over 8,000 metres high.
And in 1997, Gallagher wore a Berghaus jacket on stage in Oslo, on the first night of Oasis’s European leg of the Be Here Now tour, giving it massive exposure to a very different consumer group.
The company said its logo “evolved into a badge of honour across subcultures, with the brand’s bold, multi-panel outerwear becoming synonymous with rave culture, the ‘Madchester’ scene, and even the football terrace Casuals”.
The Icons collection launch reveal decades later is described by it as “a major moment for the brand, as it embarks on a new chapter of reclaiming its rightful place at the heart of British streetwear”. This follows its August launch of a 14-piece capsule collection made in collaboration with Palace Skateboards.
Given the surge of interest around the Oasis reunion, the inclusion of Gallagher is perfect timing for any brand seeking to gain attention with a key launch.
Gallagher said of his link-up with the label: “My first encounter with Berghaus was through my brother Noel. He purchased a green one in the late 80s and I was always pinching it off him. They were all the rage and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of my own. I thought to myself ‘when I’m rich and famous I’m getting myself one.’ I finally did that and I’ve still got it to this day. To be asked to work with them on their comeback means a lot.”
